Si vs. Se: Internal Reference vs. Immediate Reality
Both attend to concrete information: Si compares the present with internal reference points, while Se responds more directly to what is happening now.
The question
When faced with changes, do you first compare your past experiences, or do you first observe what can be done on the spot?
Si uses internal reference points
Si notices continuity, change, and the conditions under which past experience applied. This can support reliability, but familiarity may sometimes obscure genuinely new conditions.
Se uses immediate feedback
Se notices opportunities, risks, and sensory facts in the present environment. This can support a quick response, but longer-term cumulative effects may receive less attention.
When the device is abnormal, Si first compares the historical record with the normal state; Se first watches, listens, operates, and observes the feedback at this moment.
What this does not mean
- Si does not equal a memory champion or a conservative.
- Se does not mean being sporty, party-loving or impulsive.
Try this now
- Si users can design a reversible trial for a new method.
- Se users can ask about delayed costs before acting.
- Use both historical baselines and current field data when deciding.
