Fi vs. Fe: Personal Values vs. Relational Coordination

Both deal with values and people, but the reference points for judgment are different.

?
The question

In times of conflict, do you first confirm what you truly agree with, or how to continue the conversation in the relationship?

01

Fi references personal values

Fi checks whether a choice aligns with personal values and lived experience. This can protect authenticity and individual differences, but important positions may remain unspoken for too long.

02

Fe references relational values

Fe reads relationship dynamics and the effect on a group. This can build shared understanding, but it may also lead someone to overcommit for the sake of harmony.

In real life

When the team decides to hurt a few people, Fi may first hold on to the bottom line of personal value; Fe may first find a joint solution that allows the relevant people to be heard.

Misconceptions

What this does not mean

  • Fi does not mean being selfish or emotional.
  • Fe does not mean being flattering or more empathetic.
Practice

Try this now

  1. Fi users can translate values into specific requests or actions.
  2. Fe users can state their personal position clearly while coordinating with others.
  3. Ask simultaneously "Do I agree?" and "Is the relationship sustainable?"
